Wow. I love this place. Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough. This Food is right up my street. I don’t drink but love good food. Mind you they do stock some fine whiskies from Japan. Staff are fantastic. The owners James and Avery are such nice people. Other restaurant owners should dine here and learn from these. This is the place to go if you like nice fresh cooked food Chinese Japanese style. I look forward to coming back to my home town to eat here.
Although having never tried much Japanese cuisine before attending, I was slightly apprehensive of the pallet and nervous about cost but after my first visit, I can honestly say, Umi is a wonderful experience. Very friendly staff, lovely ambience and layout but to top off the cuisine is exquisite. The food is really good value for the quality delivered to the table.
Went on Saint Dwynwen’s day, 25th January (the Welsh equivalent of Saint Valentine’s Day). They went the extra mile to make the event extra special for my partner and me. *shout out to our server Not a cheap eatery but you definitely get the quality that you pay for. 5/5
The best Japanese restaurant in the area by far!! We have been several times, and never once has it disappointed. The staff are so friendly and welcoming, fantastic cocktails and the food is unbelievable! It is fairly expensive but it's worth it for the quality of the food and presentation of the drinks. Highly recommend this place.
From the quick, friendly service to the amazing food, Umi’s has never disappointed. It’s definitely the best independent Japanese restaurant in Middlesbrough, a hidden gem. It’s reasonably priced and there’s always good portion sizes. They have a wide range of cocktails on the menu, and Asahi beer is usually on draught, although this is on the expensive side for Middlesbrough. There is a set menu for dinner and a la carte for tea. We’ve never had any issues here, we usually just have starters and mains, although the desserts also look delicious.
I have been to Umi a few times over the years it's one of me and my partners favourite places to eat at. I am a vegetarian so I only order items without meat or seafood, however the sushi is still one of my favourites that I've eaten before and they have a decent amount of options for me. My partner tends to get the pork and seafood ramen which always looks nice and a good size. Eating here can however become a bit more expensive when ordering a few items, so we tend to go on special occasions. I find the staff are always really friendly and accommodating to my diet restrictions.
First time visiting this restaurant and certainly won't be the last. Very pleasant atmosphere, very clean and nicely decorated. The staff gave exemplary service, from the moment we stepped inside through to us leaving, they even took the time to try to teach us how to use the chopsticks and brought cutlery after witnessing my feeble attempt. The food was delicious I had the pork belly bao bun followed by the beef brisket ramen, my daughter had the duck bao bun and katsu chicken curry and we shared a sushi platter, we couldn't eat all the sushi and the sever boxed it up for us to take home. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning.
Came across here by chance and really enjoyed it! The food is great and there are more vegan options that staff will talk you through. Coming back for my birthday lunch
